There may be value in sleeping on it after all

I’ve been fighting back against making snap decisions at the office.  I’ve been thinking about this for a while, and I’ve found that I rarely had to make a fast decision, that gathering a little information and, most importantly, sleeping on it, or taking time out where I’m not directly thinking about the problem, aid […]

Basil finally plays right with stuffed animals

Basil used to just tear up stuffed animals when we’d give them to him. But, I won a Snoopy at a MetLaw presentation at work, and he seems to have learned to carry the stuffed toy around like bigger dogs do.  Maybe he learned this from his time in doggy daycare…

Three photos of Chinatown

Do you trust executives?

I’ve been thinking about executive salaries among other things.  A few years ago, I read an interesting article on the start of the Great Depression; the author noted that wealth had never been so concentrated in so few hands as it was just before the start. Today I read “In Bailout Furor, Wall Street Pay […]

Bail out foriegn banks? You’re kidding, right?

In today’s New York Times I read “Foreign Nations Pledge Support, but Not Financing” with some interest. I especially liked the following quote: “There’s a view in Europe that this is a U.S.-made problem, and that it should be solved in the U.S.,” said Charles H. Dallara, the managing director of the Institute for International […]

Don’t pay me now, I’ll just print money

So I’ve been watching all the shenanigans surrounding our current financial crisis.  And I’ve been reading and hearing about what Barack Obama and John McCain plan to do about it (you can’t miss it, just turn on any television in the United States). Let’s see, we’ve had quite a while where taxes were reduced for […]

Another big news day

I like reading the New York Times every morning, along with the Wall Street Journal.  And there’s a lot to consider today. For example, our embassy in Yemen was attacked by thugs; luckily in this case, they killed themselves, unfortunately also killing innocent bystanders, but then that’s one of the goals for terrorists, since they […]

Squirrels at the complex

There are a bunch of brown ground squirrels at our apartment complex.  You see, we had grey squirrels in Chicago, so these were quite original for us, as they’re smaller, a bit less bushy, and, yes, brown. And people feed them in the complex, so they are pretty brazen.  Here’s a picture I took of […]

MOCA and Little Tokyo

We decided to visit the main MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art), which is just down the street from Little Tokyo. We parked across the street from the Disney Concert Hall, which was designed by Frank Gehry, who designed the Millenium Park Pavilion in Chicago.  The building is really neat but slightly out of place among […]

Studio City, Burbank and Bergamot Station

We drove over to Studio City and had lunch at Art’s Delicatessen & Restaurant on Ventura Blvd.  The food was really good – it was nice to find a good deli here. We stopped in a small gift shop that’s going out of business and ended up buying a Piero Fornasetti self-portrait plate for $80; […]
