The islands

For our last full day in Venezia, we took an afternoon cruise to three islands: Murano, Burano, and Torcello. Murano is famous for their glass works – we bought some nice gifts there (including one low priced vase for ourselves). Burano is famous for their lace making. Torcello is the oldest center of civil rule in Venezia (Venezia was settled when flooding on the mainland caused mosquitos to flourish and creating a malaria epidemic which drove the people from Torcello). We almost missed the boat back from Torcello, which would have been very bad – there are only 75 full-time residents, and the main attraction is the church which dates back to the 900s AD.
