Walking around Distant Lands one day, I saw this book and wanted to read it – I have a great interest in subways after living in Chicago for 17 years and using the subway almost daily.
Randy Kennedy wrote the subway column for the New York Times, “Tunnel Vision,” and this book is a collection of some of the columns. It’s a fascinating look at the NYC subway from historical, political, social and cultural perspectives. There are a lot of facts and dates, but even more interesting stories, like the guy who built a conductor’s cab in his bedroom from discarded subway train parts….
This is a great read, almost like a Reader’s Digest collection – highly recommended if you’re interested in subways.
