I read this book on vacation in Palm Desert March 2005. I read Salt last summer by the same author, and I also enjoyed this book. As you might expect, this book is about the history of cod, especially how man has almost fished them out of existence. As a nice touch, there are a bunch of old recipes for cooking salted and fresh cod.
Salted cod was very important to a number of old empires, as it was a simple fish that preserved especially well in salt (its low in fat and oil).
