Lake Charlevoix, Michigan

We drove up to Manitowoc, Wisconsin on Friday – we had dinner in a little restaurant downtown. They built 28 submarines in Manitowoc during World War II and they have one open as a museum at the waterfront. There was an amazing billboard on the way to dinner; guess they really like Bud here:

We boarded the SS Badger, a car ferry across Lake Michigan, Saturday morning. The boat was comfortable and large, but there were some loud people on board that were annoying.

The lighthouse in Ludington, Michigan, was pretty cool.

We drove up to Lake Charlevoix and the Foster Boat Works Saturday evening, arriving around 10:30PM. The condo was clean and reasonably spacious. There was a luggage cart for hauling all our stuff up to the room and, thank goodness, an elevator (we were on the third floor). Here is a view from our window the Sunday morning:

Sunday we went into Charlevoix and shopped a little – we were pretty tired from the driving and riding the boat. Monday we drove north to Petosky and Harbor Springs to shop a bit more. Tuesday we drove into Traverse City – that night Brian, one of Aviva’s brothers, arrived. Wednesday the three of us drove out to Suttons Bay on the other side of Traverse City from us. I of course took a few pictures….

We then drove out to Northport, the city on the end of the peninsula. I took a few more photos here of the lighthouses (the old and new ones) and the landscape. Its very quiet and peaceful there.

Thursday, July 4th (and my birthday), we drove out to Harbor Springs, but we couldn’t get into town – they were having a big celebration. So, we went to Petosky State Park.

We left Friday for Ludington to take the ferry back to Manitowoc – Aviva bought a fish on board, which she really loves:

We arrived at 11PM in Manitowoc, got our car and stayed overnight at the Village Inn in Two Rivers just outside of Manitowoc – here is a photo of the cars being unloaded that night:

We drove home Saturday morning.

On the trip, I read three books. First, I finished Managing Einsteins – I would highly suggest this book to anyone that has to lead and manage a team of geeks. Then, I read First Among Equals, which is a very good book for new team leaders. Lastly, I read Cortisans and Fishcakes, a book about food, drink and sex in classical Athens – this book was a little dense but had its fun moments.
