September 23, 2005 - Arrival in Naples

I'm really looking forward to this vacation - work has been hard recently (but also rewarding to me) and taking a break now is a good thing I think. As usual, I'm bringing some books along, as I love to read while on vacation.

We're lucky - we had enough miles with Northwest to get a pair of coach seats on all the flights on this trip, along with enough points to stay at the Marriott Mediterraneo in downtown Naples for free.

We arrived in Naples, waited and waited for our bags which finally showed up, and took a rapid cab ride to the hotel. We cleaned up and went out to see a few sites.

We walked by the oldest bank in Italy, Banco di Napoli. The facade is very facist, done by one of the most important architects of that period.

We started with a famous shopping plaza located near the hotel, Galleria Umberto I. Its roughly a cross shape with a very high glass and iron roof and a highly decorated interior and a dome. It seems very similar to a shopping structure next to the Duomo in Milan.

We walked down to the Piazza Plebiscito, which has the Palazzo Reale on one side and S. Francesco Di Paola on the other. S. Francesco Di Paola is modeled after a combination of St. Peters in the Vatican City (the columnade) and the Pantheon in Rome (the interior).
