{"id":742,"date":"2008-10-18T19:57:02","date_gmt":"2008-10-19T02:57:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.alephnaught.com\/Blog\/?p=742"},"modified":"2008-10-23T07:21:53","modified_gmt":"2008-10-23T14:21:53","slug":"bernini-and-illuminated-manuscripts-at-the-getty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alephnaught.com\/Blog\/2008\/10\/18\/bernini-and-illuminated-manuscripts-at-the-getty\/","title":{"rendered":"Bernini and Illuminated Manuscripts at the Getty"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content_div-742\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The Bernini show at the Getty Museum was due to finish in just over a week, so we decided to go see art on a hilltop.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The Getty Museum is a huge complex just off the 405 heading south from us.\u00c2\u00a0 You pay $10 for parking; that&#8217;s it, there&#8217;s no entrance fee.\u00c2\u00a0 There&#8217;s a tram that takes you from the parking area up to the museum proper.\u00c2\u00a0 You could walk, but its probably a 15 to 30 minute hike up hill, so be prepared if you wish to do this.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We started with a one room show of illuminated manuscript images called &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.getty.edu\/art\/exhibitions\/power_piety\/\" target=\"_blank\">Faces in Power and Piety: Medieval Portraiture<\/a>.&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0 This show knocked my socks off &#8211; its somewhat unusual to see a number of manuscript pages displayed together, and this small collection had great range while centering upon the combination of power and religion in medieval Europe.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.alephnaught.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/fouquetvirginandchild.jpg\" class=\"thickbox\" title=\"Jean Fouquet, &quot;The Virgin and Child,&quot; 1455<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Then we walked over to &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.getty.edu\/art\/exhibitions\/bernini\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bernini and the Birth of Baroque Portrait Sculpture<\/a>,&#8221; which was pleasant but not especially thrilling.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;m just not a big fan of Baroque art, but we wanted to see this show since he was Italian and we&#8217;ll be over in Italy next month.\u00c2\u00a0 This show might have been better if they hadn&#8217;t included two rooms of work by later artists &#8211;
