It is a wonderful book!

This is Daniel Keyes’s own story of how the famous novella and novel Flowers for Algernon, and to some degree the movie version Charly, came to be. Small things meant a lot – many of Keyes’s ideas came from moments, for example he decided that Charlie should become smart and then regress when a young special ed student told him he wanted to be smart. The book shows how hard it is to write a good story, how much work really goes into a novel, and how hurtful early bad reviews can be to the author.

The book ends with the original novella – if you can read it and not cry, you’re not human.
