Today we did the Uffizi; the word uffizi means office, and it was the office of the government of the Medicis in Firenze. They have a whole room of Botticellis, who is one of my favs. The square inside the Uffizi is packed with artists selling their wares (we bought a small watercolor of the Ponte Vecchio); we watched a mime for a while.<\/p>\n

There are great grotesques in the Uffizi and Palazzo Pitti – grotesques are small decorative devices typically painted on a wall; they got their name from the grottoes from ancient Rome, most notably the decorations of Nero’s palace.<\/p>\n

Then we saw the Palazzo Vechio, which was a Medici palace before the Palazzo Pitti (which is now an art gallery) was ready for habitation.<\/p>\n

We ate at a little ristorante that was chock full of children. We noticed that, about half way through our time in Firenze, a large number of tours of school children started showing up in town, many of them French. Most amazing of all, at lunch Aviva actually didn’t care if we went to a church! I finished The Doors of Perception\/Heaven and Hell<\/a> and started The Catcher in the Rye<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
