{"id":207,"date":"2007-08-29T15:25:08","date_gmt":"2007-08-29T15:25:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/alephnaught.wordpress.com\/?p=260"},"modified":"2007-08-29T15:25:08","modified_gmt":"2007-08-29T15:25:08","slug":"netherlands-sets-plan-on-extremism-ny-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alephnaught.com\/Blog\/2007\/08\/29\/netherlands-sets-plan-on-extremism-ny-times\/","title":{"rendered":"Netherlands Sets Plan on Extremism (NY Times)"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content_div-207\">\n<p>Interesting article from the NY Times.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/08\/28\/world\/europe\/28dutch.html?_r=1&amp;n=Top%2fNews%2fWorld%2fCountries%20and%20Territories%2fNetherlands&amp;oref=slogin\" target=\"_blank\">This article<\/a> reminded me of the day after Theo van Gogh was killed.\u00c2\u00a0 I was in Amsterdam working at the time, and I remember the night he died, there was loud noise coming from Dam Square &#8211; pots banging and people shouting and protesting.\u00c2\u00a0 I learned the next day that it was a demonstration against van Gogh&#8217;s death.<\/p>\n<p>I rode in a taxi with a Pakistani driver &#8211; he told me that extremists should go home, as they&#8217;ll never integrate with Dutch society.\u00c2\u00a0 I got lots of different views from my Dutch friends &#8211; some wanted to expell them all, others thought it was an isolated incident and should be treated like any crime.<\/p>\n<p>For me, I&#8217;m sorry it happened for his family, for Ayaan Hirsi Ali (who wrote the movie that inflamed passions &#8211; she had to leave the Netherlands and come to the US), and for the Dutch &#8211; the thing I think I treasure most about Amsterdam is the tolerance and pragmatic attitude of the people.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"translate_block\" style=\"display: none;\">\n<hr class=\"translate_hr\" \/>\n<a class=\"translate_translate\" id=\"translate_button_post-207\" lang=\"en\" xml:lang=\"en\" href=\"javascript:show_translate_popup('en', 'post', 207);\"><span>Translate<\/span><\/a><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.alephnaught.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/plugins\/google-ajax-translation\/transparent.gif?resize=16%2C16&#038;ssl=1\" id=\"translate_loading_post-207\" class=\"translate_loading colorbox-207\" style=\"display: none;\" width=\"16\" height=\"16\" alt=\"\" \/>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Interesting article from the NY Times.
