I found this book while searching the stacks at Book Soup; I thought it would be interesting to learn more about the events leading up to the recording of this classic album, and this book delivers the sights, smells and timelines you’d want.
There are 10 chapters. The book starts with a brief history of Eric Clapton, then moves to all the other members of Derek and the Dominos and some of the people surrounding the band. It was cool to learn that Layla came from a 12th century Arabic/Persian poem about unrequited love, which Clapton saw as a parable about his relationship with Patty Boyd, George Harrison’s wife at the time.
It’s also neat how Delaney and Bonnie and Friends and Leon Russell helped bring the Dominos together.
And the true story about the why Bobby Whitlock wrote the final song on the album will likely surprise you and may bring a tear to your eye; it’s also funny how George Harrison responded to “Thorn Tree in the Garden.”
It was hard for me to put this book down; it’s a fun easy read with lots of good dish and some wonderful bits that will give you a better fuller understanding of Derek and the Dominos’s “Layla & Other Assorted Love Songs.”
