“Ads for Saudi Bank Focus on Women”, article from
the NY Times March 7, 2005

The article says that a major Saudi bank, Banque
Saudi Fransi, is going public with its women’s banking effort. Women are
allowed to manage their own finances in Islam, and they can inherit wealth.
But, they can’t go to a bank teller that is male – that would be too close a
relationship between men and women. So, the Saudis have women-only banks –
there are male guards, but they stay outside. Inside the bank all the people
the customers see are female. And the customers are of course all female as
well.

This is another way that the Saud
family has found to modernize the country while trying to stay within the strict
bounds of Wahabi belief.
