They see their Java effort as geared to web interfaces. The goal is to deliver services directly to customers. Java enables business logic in the VM inside the browser. Two major design problems are occasional connections and thin clients with web Java software.
First Union Capital Markets was used as an example. They used PowerJ (an IDE from Sybase) along with jConnect to develop applications. They replicate part of their main database to laptops for portable remote computing. Sybase is updating PowerBuilder to output Java code.
PowerJ covers all tiers for development. jConnect is 100% Pure Java that provides native drivers for JDBC V. 3.0 compatible Java applications. Jaguar CTS 1.1 includes Enterprise JavaBeans for their transaction server.
Adaptive Server supports J/SQL and Java object types. It provides a 100% Pure Java VM. With this version, you can use Java for stored procedures and as column entries in tables.
