April 4, 2000 - Art day

Bob: Today we did the Uffizi; the word uffizi means office, and it was the office of the government of the Medicis in Firenze. They have a whole room of Botticellis, who is one of my favs. The square inside the Uffizi is packed with artists selling their wares (we bought a small watercolor of the Ponte Vecchio); we watched a mime for a while.

Aviva: This was my second time here, and of course, I was stunned by all the famous paintings. But, on this trip I re-discovered the art of "grotesque", decoration on plaster that occupies entire ceilings. I was fascinated by the fanciful mural decorations that mixed animal and human forms and floral ornament. Occasionally, you discover a small vignette, a landscape or city-scene which reminded me of the magic realism of Diego Rivera or Remedios Varos.

This is a grotesque from the Uffizi

Bob: Then we saw the Palazzo Vechio, which was a Medici palace before the Palazzo Pitti (which is now an art gallery) was ready for habitation.

We ate at a little ristorante that was chock full of children. We noticed that, about half way through our time in Firenze, a large number of tours of school children started showing up in town, many of them French. Most amazing of all, at lunch Aviva actually didn't care if we went to a church! I finished The Doors of Perception/Heaven and Hell and started The Catcher in the Rye.
