Walked by the point where the Chicago fire started

I had lunch last week with a friend of mine, a former peer at LaSalle Bank. As we walked by a building for the Chicago Fire Department, he asked me if I’d been to the starting point of the Chicago fire – I said no, and he said were were there now! There is a […]

Visit with my son for my mom’s 82nd birthday

Nathan and I both traveled to Columbus to visit my mom. Nathan and Terry drove down from Monroe, MI, and I caught a flight to Columbus. My mom has her 82nd birthday coming up and we celebrated it on the Saturday before. We had a nice dinner together. From front clockwise – Terry, Nathan, Joe, […]

Paper model of Chartres Cathedral – IT’S DONE!

I bought a model to assemble of the famous Chartres Cathedral in the Cathedral gift shop, and this entry will track how I put it together. The model is large, at least 2 1/2 feed long and a foot or so wide.  Its pretty complex with a lot of little parts (mostly the flying buttresses), […]

Laid off

It finally happened – I got laid off from LaSalle Bank on June 29, 2007.  First time in over 20 years.  LaSalle Bank has been trying to reduce costs for years, and they’re finally putting out a bunch of people to do that.  Will it work?  I don’t know. I probably should have followed events […]

Tilton’s Reading Challenge

LaSalle Bank partners with Tilton Elementary School. We’ve helped them set up a computer lab, done career days, mentor students, a lot of things to try to help the students. One thing LaSalle does is the annual Reading Challenge. We ask the students to read, and report on, a number of books each year. The […]

Dinner at Mitsuwa Market

We saw Mitsuwa Marketplace, 100 W, AlgonquinRoad, on the TV show Check, Please! This is an oriental market, selling a lot of Japanese and some Chinese and Korean food and, well, stuff, especiailly books. We got food at the dim sum shop, but there are 5 different food preparation stores, including one that’s Korean. The […]

Cirque du Soleil’s Delirium

Here’s a link to the page from Cirque du Soleil in case you want to learn more about this show and to get tickets. Aviva and I braved the cold (its just now getting above freezing here) to see the show last night. It was similar but different from the other shows we’ve seen. This […]

Anniversary dinner at Merlo on Lincoln

In preparation for our 16th anniversary night out, Aviva was in a quandry – where to go to dinner? We wanted Italian food – we love Italian food, but there are very, very few places in Chicagp that have food that, in our opinion, tastes at all like the preparations in Italy. I mentioned Merlo […]

Sapori Trattoria

Sapori Trattoria is on Halsted just south of Diversey. Its a small Italian restaurant with a reasonably diverse menu and a pretty good wine list. I had the squash soup and the ossabucco on lasagna – the food was really good but the service was terrible. I think something was wrong in the kitchen because […]

Election day is over!

Well, I voted again: I’m glad I did, I vote in every election. But what an election…. The ads on TV were nasty this year, and they were almost continuous. What is our country coming to….
