I’m on a roll – I’m reading all the Ender series by Orson Scott Card.

I think this is the second best book of the series, after Ender’s Game, the first book. Here, a new planet is colonized by humans, but there is another sentient life form, which they call piggies. The humans are trying to learn about the piggies without telling them about us. There is death and pain, and finally Ender arrives to help resolve the riddle of the piggies.

What I like best about these books is that Card spends little time trying to explain the science – this is fiction with interesting scientific advances taken as given to set up the story. I think its really well written and a very clever set of ideas.
